Waldegrave Sixth Form

Astudio has delivered a range of dedicated sixth form facilities for Waldegrave School including a library, study base, IT and digital suite, specialist science laboratories and a café as well as a four court sports hall and new dining hall for the whole school.

The centre forms the heart of the new co-educational sixth form at Waldegrave, which seeks to offer students an independent, exciting, and stimulating environment for learning.

A modern design aesthetic has been created across the various elements of the centre, fostering an identity distinct from the existing Waldegrave School, contributing to a mature, university style atmosphere. The new buildings also strengthen the relationship between the school and its parkland setting as the site’s open green fields have been designated as dedicated Other Open Land of Townscape Importance (OOLTI).

 

The clear and simple diagram of the sixth form centre is based on teaching spaces at the perimeter of a square building, grouped around a central atrium. The sixth form centre encourages collaborative working as well as individual study and has a large study, research and reference area, located in the centre. Lit by a large roof light, this forms the core of the sixth form centre. The buildings are designed to be transparent, allowing ample daylight to the teaching spaces and views from the dining hall.

Philippa Nunn, Head Teacher, Waldegrave School said “It is wonderful to have a sixth form at Waldegrave School, it has added to the richness of the school.  We are enjoying our new building which has transformed the whole school.”

The heating, ventilation and electrical elements of the new build have been developed to provide a familiar and intuitive teaching environment across the campus. This has been done by utilising modern passive design measures and by limiting mechanical plant, ensuring less regular need for maintenance and eventual replacement. Naturally ventilated buildings across the site now provide a long term sustainable solution to the school both in financial and energy terms.
